why the change in philosophy?
Probably because headers DO make power on these cars.

Even ported stock manifolds make more power.

Sure you can make 500-600 hp using the stock manifold, but its not because the stock manifold isn't a restriction.

Lots of dynos done by many people out there show this to be true. I don't know why some people still think stock is the best.

FTR- I was also at a TopSpeed dyno day last year with Doug. He tuned several of us with your usual stage 2 STi, no headers. He then tuned nhluhr's STi with the APS header and made more power with it than any of our stock manifold cars. One guy ran Crucial ported manifolds and made 20 more wtq than I did on the stock manifold too. So I really wouldn't put much into that quote of his.

I wish the APS header didn't have cracking issues, I loved the sound and power gains I got from mine but I just didn't want to take my chances with a second one after the first one cracked. I think other than Full-Race they have the best design. The equal length definitely make more power, but the Full-Race is unique in that they actually tested on a flow bench to achieve optimal (and even) flow through all of the runners. Plus they use 8 gauge stainless and flawless welds so the chances of it cracking are almost nil. It's just too bad their stuff is so expensive, but I guess that's what you pay if you want perfect hand welded stuff with a ton of R&D behind it. It's on my list, although I'm pretty happy with my ported stock stuff now.

well because no one is kind enough to actually answer your question...

gt spec gen 2
maddad
gruppe-s

these three are the more popular unequal length, i have the gt spec's which are great but i originally had an order for maddad's because they're awesome, but they were backordered at the time..
i would get maddad, they have an egt bung tapped in the proper location and the quality is great.
Impreza WRX Performance Parts

Maddad's stuff is always engineered for the enthusiast. I would go Maddad also.

I wasn't saying that headers DON"T add power, however, I think everyone needs to do their own Cost/Benefit analysis to find out if $500+ to gain 10-20hp is worth it for them?

If it is, great, go with some of the products recommended here!

If not, then allocate your modding $$ somewhere else!

I'm surprised no one has asked what the OP mods/goals are....??

That's all...

are the Perrin no good any more. I see mentions of both EL and UEL headers but no mention of the Perrin. I have the perrin and like them very much. I believe they were the best in the previous header tests by NABISCO and members from here. They had gains

why would the perrin's not be good? mine are great, added low end torque, got rid of the harley davidson sound (puts on flame suit), and made the turbo spool about 200rpms quicker, and flows nicely across the board...whats not to love?...no one knows what my car is anymore because it doesnt sound like a subaru

Had my Perrin put on Sunday, and just had it tuned today by Dave @ MSPT. Even he said the car is a torque monster and I agree, 6th gear overtaking is so easy on the highways and I'm loving it. :) As a side bonus, the car sounds somewhat like a Porsche. :D

I hear ya man, Im on my third set of APS EL's. But since they came out with spacers between the header and upipe they've been strong for 15,000 or about a year and a half.

I recently swapped out my invidia equal length header/up-pipe combo for a ported stock manifold/ingen x-pipe/invidia up-pipe combo so I could go ewg. I can say that I think the car did lose a bit of power on the low end, as well as the smooth non-e.l. sound. My current setup isnt tuned but at this point Im looking forward to selling the whole new ewg and manifold setup and getting a good header back on the car. Might go with the maddad or DCsports this time.

well, your car was pretty crazy, what 40k in a wrx back when they came out. hard to forget. hope all is well, whats your car lineup lately? that cobra powered focus come together? you always have some interesting cars.
Believe it or not, I still have the cars as back then, minus a couple family haulers, and on top of them, a few AMGs and an M joined the family. As time rolls by, only more will be enlisted, gotta stay true to my screen name. :)

Without any experience on my behalf, full race seems to be the popular choice for "best" headers. Someone had posted some dyno charts before testing various headers as the only change without a tune. IIRC, Perrin gained the most power, Gruppe-S was next at a significantly lower price. However, they did some PnP to the stockers and uppipe and got almost the same results as the Gruppe-S.

So if money is no object, go with Full Race. Have a bit of a budget? Perrin or Gruppe-S. If you are broke, try PnP yourself. There are How To threads on Nasioc for this.

I am sure there are other headers that I havent mentioned here, but this is the info I ran across in a few searches when I was looking for info. FWIW, I am most likely going to PnP my own headers and pick up a Grimmspeed Xpipe and up pipe.

very well said!

i need to see the list with pics, back when i had no $, you were the guy who had all the cars that made people drool!...or at least me!...i can only imagine what that sti looks like.
Thank you for the kind words. I will have pictures of all the cars after the move from Bayside, NY to Long Island. During this move, I'm starting to hate myself with all the parts from all these cars.

The STi is nothing to drool over, I've toned down a bit, trust me on this. ;)
