Hey guys, this may be a trivial one time occurance but just throwing this out there. I had just washed the car on this sunny day, and took it for a spin. about 20 minutes of driving later, i pulled into a parking lot, and just as i braked and pulled the e-brake up, i heard a loud pop. a really LOUD pop. I immediately think of the e-brake cable snapping so i did a small roll and and e-brake check, the car stopped. I figured it may be just one cable snapping so i got home, lifted her up, and checked to see if both rear wheels stopped free spinning when I pull the ebrake, and they both did.

My question is, has anyone ever heard such a random loud pop as they parked, or at a stand still? I looked over everything under the car and nothing looks damaged. didn't run over any bottles or debris as i parked either, just found it odd, and given how loud the pop was, im a bit nervous that something could have gone awry.

thanks

@Aguamala, it definitely wasn't a backfire pop, this sounded like a mechanical pop/clang underneath the car, approximately where the armrest is. i'm skeptical about the transmission making the noise as well, i was already in neutral as i coasted to a stop into the parking spot.

Functional-wise, everything seems to be working and I cant track down any broken bits. I guess it's not going to be a problem, until it becomes a problem lol. I'm not sweating it too much, if it breaks, the dealer will take care of it. i'll update if there is anything to update, thanks guys

well thats more of a clunk
That's just terminology. What one person calls a clunk another may call a pop, and vice versa.

The OP was completely stopped when here heard the "pop"
I didn't get that impression at all.

"just as i braked and pulled the e-brake up"

"as they parked, or at a stand still" (this is the only mention of being stopped, and it is given as an alternative to 'as they parked')

"as i coasted to a stop"

All of these phrases suggest to me that OP was still rolling when he popped the parking brake. It's an important distinction. If OP was rolling, the sound is a non-issue.

I'm gonna revive this one. Was parked overnight, got in my car, let it warm up, dropped the e-brake, as soon as I started to reverse, I hear a loud pop, almost a chassis pop. Notes: It rained yesterday and I drove in it and it's like 15 degrees warmer this AM. Sound like the same thing?

thats definitely the shoes sticking after they got wet. Happened on my 2015 and does on my 15. Its what makes a subaru a subaru....

:) :) Mine never needed to get wet - just some humidity will cause it. :) :)

This. Metallic pads pressed against iron rotors will rust when wet. I tend not to use the parking brake when leaving the car for an extended period of time after it has rained or I got a wash (as long as it's on flat ground).

in my 06 the e-brake would slip every so often making a loud noise that always made me flinch and stop in my tracks. not sure if this was after the e-brake was engaged or released but the e-brake is a safe bet to place the blame unless you are sure it wasnt a different type of noise.

if you always pull the e-brake to pretty much the same level pay attention to that and see if it slipped down a couple notches. not sure if that helps but its something to pay attention to

It's crazy this thread is up here because I was just going to post something about the sound I heard in almost the same situation. Was pulling into a parking spot at safeway and heard a really REALLY loud metallic clunk/pop underneath the car. At first I thought I ran over something, but I got out and there was nothing around.

I know what the brake pad "clunk" sounds like and this wasn't it. This was an extremely loud metallic clunk that sounded like it was coming from the center of the car right under the dash. I dunno if this is what OP heard but I freaked me out as well.
