Used 20G or FP HTA68?

Im at the point where my VF39 and stock fuel system is almost out of steam. I eventually want to get a 30R or 35R and get into the mid 400whp range with forged pistons. But this is pretty far away right now. like 3 or 4 years. so Id like to do a power upgrade that will bring me into the 340-370whp range, to last me till then. (will be happy anywhere in there)

I have been looking at the FP HTA 68 as a possibility but Ive looked into it and there arent enough solid results out there yet for me to buy with total confidence (ie, i dont want to spend $850 for a measly 10whp) FP claims its good for 340-360whp on an sti. but i have some doubts after reading some stuff. this turbo only costs $850 so if it is good for 350whp, then its kind of a bargin.

Now my other idea is to buy a used 20g of some type for a similar price as I know they are well capable of mid 300s. Id even be willing to buy one that needs a rebuild and give it to Blouch, A1320, or Precision.

What do you all think I should do and what should I be watching out for. Also, for 20Gs what company's products should I stay away from? and what types of flaws are too bad to be worth rebuilding?

Thanks all

Long time no see, there bud, still go out to the Meets?

On a side note, Id personally go with a brand new 20G for right now not used. Most people would go with a FP Green but I don't like them, look into Blouch.

Getting a 30R or 35R you gonna need a motor rebuild. at least with a 20G all you need is meth, 740cc injectors and an upgraded top mount and a good tune.

Ya i go to meets when I can. Lately I been hitting up best buy on tuesdays.

If I go with a 20g, its gotta be used cuz my price range is not much more than 850 for a turbo now. I dont plan on running meth at all. Idk why, ive never really liked the idea of running meth for some reason.I just dont know how that HTA 68 performs, but i think unless i see some real proof in the next week or so that it is that good, then i'll probly go with the 20G. Im doing 850cc injectors and a walbro 255 too. (850cc's in preparation for the 30R or 35R, i dont want to buy them twice) And yes I will be doing pistons at the same time as the big turbo. This middle step is just to hold me off till then.

I have a Perrin tmic in my basement already and i will be getting tuned at precision tuning.

A 20g plus E85 netted me 65 more to the wheels over stage II. That would be my vote. Plus you're at sea level (I'm at 6k elevation) and probably have access to 93 ocane. Even if you don't have E85, you should see damn good increases. Meth I guess would be an option but it's definitely not necessary. If you do E85 you'll need at least 850cc injectors anyway.

If you're planning on a full rebuild in the future, I would just save the money and put it towards that. You don't realllllly want to mess with a used turbo anyway, they are bad news. I know you want more power now to hold you over, but I think it might be a better idea to hold off and just wait to do your full 35r setup.

I would wait if it were gonna happen somewhat soon, but i dont think it will for a good while. like not till after 2011 or so. thats hella long. my mom is selling me her car then to use as my DD, and once my sti isnt my DD, then i plan to build the motor and go big turbo. This mid step is to hold me off. also, theres alot of time between now and the 35R/ engine build. alot can happen in that time and id like to make the most of the car, and not wait to do something big and have it never happen. you know?

im in college now and I dont have the money to do the 35R right, with a built motor, EWG, FMIC, EBCS, and all the other stuff right now. but im worried that if I just wait to do stuff, it may just never happen, cuz theres alot of time in between.

Id like to at least do at least get to mid 300whp range and then start saving up for a long term big turbo set up that may never actually happen. Maybe im paranoid, but things in life have a way of changing, and id like to get the most outta my sti while things are all good.

What other options are there to get me to mid 300whp range besides a 20g, for under 2000 dollars?

Save your money so you can do everything in one shot, it will be a PITA, not getting everything done at once. Your fine with what you have now. keep playing with that for the time being, If you wanted but not suggested go with a FP Green for right now and run meth with 650CC Injectors and a upgraded TMIC to hold you over, that will put you in the 400Hp range give or take.

Take a look at this and see what you think.

I agree its kinda a pain to do things twice. thats why im doing 850cc injectors, so they will work for later too. there will probly be about 30-40k miles put on my midrange setup. like I said, it'll be a few years. im not worried about any hassle, cuz im gonna have one of the shops around here do the install when i go with the big turbo setup. But i think i will be able to do most of this mid step install myself as my old auto teacher said he could let me use the shop for a few days to get this done this summer.

I have the perrin tmic already, so i need the turbo, injectors, pump, and plugs if i need to go one step colder. then it should be ready for install. im looking for turbos now, and Im saving up money as we speak. If i really need a quick thousand, i can consider selling my stock BBSs. but i kinda want them as winter wheels.

But can anyone tell me things i should look out for when buying a used turbo?

I bought this turbo brand new off ebay for 350 shipped it was so cheap that it wont really set me back if its crap lol i wasn't able to find much reasearch about this turbo but what i did find seemed to be ok i have it sitting in my room now and i am very impressed with quality for the price i paid i dont have it in yet because im waiting on some aps parts from austrailia but ill let you know how this turbo goes the only other things is, where the coolant line goes on the turbo seems to be in a slightly diffrent location and youll need to buy the metal coolant lines and banjo bolts but i also found those on ebay for 60$

No Not really, I just heard alot about him, he was the teacher before I went to Sypek for auto. I was one of the top kids in the class, My teacher only let me and this other kid do the work. it was pretty sad he didn't trust anyone else. you might know the kid his name is ben crane I still talk to the kid frequently, he's helping me become a volly firefighter.

For the most part I am done with TST, I am not totally out of the game, But to be honest I honestly was never in it, If my car was stick they're be a crap load of stuff done to it, Now I am just saving up for something better in all honesty. I was gonna get another maxima in stick shift and Boost it still not sure yet. Well see when that time comes, I don't really have a straight answer for anything these days.

Buy a stock location 30R and have it tuned conservatively. Should you want to push the turbo to its limits drop in some forged pistons and be done. This the route I should have gone to begin with. My stock motor didn't like the high boost small turbos.
